Solar Radiation Testing

Solar Radiation on materials can cause cosmetic deterioration with the fading or oxidation of plastic. This oxidation can make components start to fade. The heating effects of the sun can cause plastic, vinyl and/or metal components to shift or distort, causing operational interruption, shorts and false control inputs. The most significant effect is discoloration that cheapens the look of any quality product. These effects can be accentuated when combined with temperature and humidity.

Another effect, in combination with humidity can be delamination of plasticizers, vinyl coatings and plastics. The typical property changes include: 1) reduced ductility, 2) embrittlement, 3) chalking, 4) color change, 5) yellowing, and 6) cracking. Products and electronics that are interior-mounted to a vehicle Instrument Panel (IP) or resting on top of the IP could be susceptible to a direct sunlight surface temperature rise of plus 30°C above ambient.

We can handle a wide range of product sizes, up to a surface area of 324 sq. inches in our 60” (1.52 m) W x 50” (1.27 m) D x 82” (2.08 m) H walk-in chamber. This chamber will also accommodate a wide range of temperature and humidity settings, such as those found in MIL-STD-810.
